Omaha Symphony Act

Omaha Performing Arts continues to bring sensational, Tony Award winning, smash hit musicals to the Orpheum Theater. Under the superior direction of Joan Squires, President of Omaha Performing Arts, area audiences will experience Broadway tours yet to travel through Omaha as well as a returning favorite.

On April 3rd, 2017, Joan Squires presented the OPA 2017/2018 Broadway Series lineup during the Subscriber and Patron Season Reveal event at the Holland Performing Arts Center. Upcoming shows include award-winning Broadway productions, performances by current and rising stars and some returning favorites. And if the crowd reaction was any indication, this next Broadway season will be one of the best yet.

According to Squires, there are many factors that go into the decision-making process for the selection of Broadway tours that OPA brings to The Orpheum stage. “We focus on the best of the touring productions as well as the newest Tony Award winning shows and fan favorite revivals and blockbusters,” she said. “Tour routes and other logistics also determine what shows are added.” Squires, who is the only Tony Voter from Nebraska, goes to New York City to see shows first hand and that also helps in selection process.

The 2017/2018 Broadway series line-up is sensational, one smash hit, Tony Award winning show after another and Squires is very excited about each of the shows. “Next year is especially strong. We have new shows as well as a returning perennial favorite: Wicked. It is a very strong season.” As far as Squire’s favorite Broadway show coming next season, she said that she does have a slight favorite. “I love seeing all shows in Orpheum Theater, I love them all and some I have seen several times. I do love Waitress, though, it is a personal favorite because of Sara Bareilles.”

The spectacular season begins in October with Finding Neverland. Directed by visionary Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and based on the critically acclaimed Academy Award winning film, Finding Neverland, it tells the incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved characters: Peter Pan. This show is for all ages and will run from October 10, 2017 to October 15, 2017.

From soaring atop the clouds to swimming under the sea, the next Broadway Blockbuster is Disney’s The Little Mermaid. From November 7, 2017 through November 12, 2017, audiences will literally be swept away by the music of eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and the story based upon the classic, favorite Disney animated film.

Serving up the next groundbreaking, outstanding hit is Waitress, and audiences will want to come back for seconds! This lovable new hit features original music and lyrics by six-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles Brought and was created to life by a first-ever all-female creative team. Inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s beloved film of the same name, Waitress introduces audiences to Jenna who is a waitress and expert pie maker who feels lonely in a loveless marriage. A baking contest and a new doctor may be just the ingredients for a second chance at love. This show will run from December 12, 2017 to December 17, 2017.

Just waiting to get to know you in January of 2018 is the cast of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I. From January 16, 2018 to January 21, 2018, two worlds collide in this breathtaking musical, directed by Bartlett Sher. Known as one of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, The King and I is a timeless, beloved classic with songs that we know by heart. “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful”.
From Siam to the city of lights, An American in Paris is next in the series and will be new to Omaha. An American in Paris is the Tony Award winning musical about an American soldier, a mysterious French girl and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. This classic tale will run from February 13, 2018 to February 18, 2018.

As for the season’s closing show, what better way to celebrate an already fantastic season than with the return of Wicked. This Broadway blockbuster takes audiences back to the Land of Oz long before Dorothy made her fateful trip. Meet Glenda and the Wicked Witch as they turn a rivalry into a life-long friendship that stands the test of time. Wicked will run from May 16, 2018 to June 3, 2018.

And, as a great tease for the 2018/2019 season, the national tour of Hamilton will wow at the Orpheum Theater and only Broadway Series ticket subscribers to the 2017/2018 will have first access to these priceless tickets when they renew their subscription for the 2018/2019 season.
