Right at Home Nurse with Client

Right at Home was founded on the vision of Allen Hager. Allen worked in healthcare as an administrator for many years but noticed that many patients, especially seniors, did not return to health when they returned home. He contributed this in large part to their inability to care for themselves. Allen knew that with a little help most of these people could lead healthy happy lives on their own in their own homes. Allen started Right at Home in Omaha Nebraska in 1995. We recently interviewed Right at Home and here is what they had to say:

Omaha Lifestyles: What type of services does Right At Home provide?

Right at Home: Right at Home provides all levels of service designed to keep our seniors safe and independent at home as long as possible.  We offer companion and homemaker caregivers, Certified Nursing Assistants to provide hands-on personal care, Certified Medication Aides to help administer medication and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to provide skilled care.  We provide care and help with companionship, homemaker services, laundry, errands and transportation, medication reminders and administering, and meal preparation.  We also provide stand-by safety or full-care assistance with bathing and hygiene, dressing, mobility, transferring, feeding and bathroom needs.  At a higher level of care we can provide medication ordering and set-up, assessing well-being and vitals as well as many other skilled nursing services.

Omaha Lifestyles: What is Right at Home’s process in working with new clients?

Right at Home:  When we receive a call from someone who is interested in beginning services with Right at Home we will first spend time discussing their specific circumstances and needs to determine if Right at Home is the right fit.  If we determine together that Right at Home’s services match their needs, I will schedule a time to meet with the family to get a sense of the client’s personality, see the home where services will be provided, answer any final questions and secure a start date and schedule for services.  Once we have determined a start date our Director of Clinical Care, Karen McMillan RN, BSN will visit the client in their home to conduct a medical history and assessment and to set up a Plan of Care which is what our caregivers follow while providing services.  Once Karen has met with the client we will introduce the caregiver or care team.

Omaha Lifestyles: What type of caregivers does Right At Home employ? What are the hiring and screening requirements for prospective employees? Are employees insured and bonded?

Right at Home:   The majority of our caregivers are Certified Nursing Assistants, however we have companions, sitters, homemakers and nursing staff as well.  All Right at Home employees must adhere to and pass a thorough background check including criminal, motor vehicle, sex offender and the adult and child abuse registry.  All of our caregivers are bonded and insured through Right at Home and are employees, not independent contractors.  All of our caregivers are required to complete an initial training and orientation including videos, testing, skills demonstration with our Director of Clinical Care and one on one tutorial.  All of our caregivers are required to have a current driver’s license and to maintain current vehicle insurance.  They are required to complete monthly training and tutorial.

Omaha Lifestyles: How does Right at Home train, supervise and monitor caregivers? How do you assess each caregiver’s capabilities?

Right at Home: Our caregivers must pass a skills demonstration with our Director of Clinical Care, we provide peer to peer training in areas where improvement is needed.  Right at Home conducts supervisory visits, both scheduled and unannounced and evaluates its staff on a regular basis.  We are very involved in the client / caregiver relationship because a personality match is just as important as providing quality, consistent care!

Omaha Lifestyles: Are your caregivers available 24 hours a day, seven days a week?

Right at Home: Right at Home offers care from 3 hours to 24/7 care.  There is no minimum day requirement and we have clients who only need a little help once in awhile and clients who have Right at Home in their home 24/7.  We try to make the scheduling process as simple and flexible as possible- our philosophy is “Right Care”- providing the right care at the right time by the right people.  We will discuss all options with the family and determine a schedule that meets their needs while being sensitive to their budget- and we change the schedule as the client’s needs change.

Omaha Lifestyles: Tell us what you think differentiates Right At Home with other home health care providers.

Right at Home: So many people think homecare is homecare is homecare- this isn’t true!  Right at Home holds a Home Health Agency license from the state of NE and our care is regulated and overseen by NE DHHS.  We provide all levels of care because our goal is to be able to help a person stay at home through all stages of aging- from the time they need a little companionship, errands or homemaker chores, to needing assistance with their normal activities of daily living and personal care, to skilled nursing or comfort medication and hospice support care.  There is no need to change agencies.

About a year ago, Right at Home partnered with technology company Philips to design, pilot and offer the blended care model to our consumers. Right at Home is currently offering home care and remote care services in the Omaha Metro area. We are very excited about the services, which can be a huge cost-savings, while providing peace of mind to our clients and their families. The remote care services offered are very cost-effective, and can supplement or replace traditional home care while providing safety monitoring, social experience and the prevention of illness or injury that could mean high institutional healthcare costs for our clients.
